 RARE  BULBOUS  FULGURITES

The very unusual fulgurites from this locality have a peculiar characteristic that is unlike the traditional type of sand fulgurites found on our web site, where the lightning strike actually traverses down into the sand or soil when the fulgurites are formed, resulting in more or less tubular formations.

At this locality, some of the lightning strikes appear to have run directly below and nearly parallel to the surface of the sand, rather than being directed downwards. This may have been the result of a variation in composition of the sand / soil, i.e., the fulgurites were formed within porous or impure layers in the sand / soil. The minor amounts of sand / soil attached to the specimens are reminiscent of dark colored volcanic ash or other fine-grained volcanic ejecta.  Water content within the sand or soil may also have been a factor in producing these unusual specimens with bulbous terminations. Within the plasma, gases that are trying to escape formed bubbles at the ends of the fulgurite tubes and were not confined, as when the fulgurite tubes end at sub-surface depths.  The process would be similar to blowing a soap bubble through a soda straw!  Traditional, tubular fulgurites were also found at this locality, and these will be offered in the near future.

The photos are self-explanatory and the very shiny, glassy, bulbous terminations are quite amazing!  Some of the specimens have sealed tubes, or the base of the specimen is sealed, so they will actually float on water.  See item F-1042 for a photo illustrating what the interiors of these bulbous fulgurites look like most are partially hollow!  In the table below:

B = specimens with bulbous terminations, or beads

B + S = bulbous terminations, with a small, traditional fulgurite stem or neck

Pricing is as follows:

Individual large specimens:              $6.00 / gram

Lots of fulgurite beads:                    $7.00 / gram
